Health care providers' revenues, costs and fixed assets 2016

Data on health care providers’ revenues, costs and fixed assets in 2016 were published in the Health Statistics and Health Research Database. Data is available also by Hospital Master Plan hospitals.

86% of the health care providers closed the financial year with a positive result in 2016. Previous years showed similar results: 87% in 2015 and 85% in 2014.

Funding from the Estonian Health Insurance Fund comprises the largest share, namely 68% of all the health care providers’ revenues.

The share of labor costs in operating expenses has steadily increased in recent years reaching 53% in 2016.

Diagnostics and therapeutic procedures in 2016

Yearly data about 2016 diagnostics and therapeutic procedures were published in the Health Statistics and Health Research Database. Radiology data are available also by Hopital Masterplan hospitals.

In two years comparison the data about procedures on interventional radiology decreased by 6%.

The number of radiological examinations has decreased but the number of patients investigated has increased by 5%.

In 2016, total number of functional diagnostics increased by 3.3% compared to 2015. It also increased per 100 patients – up to 16 examinations.

The number of computed tomography and magnetic resonance tomography examinations continued to increase like on previous years.

Total number of ultrasonography examinations increased by 0.3% compared to 2015.

An increase was registered also in total numbers as well as per 100 patients in rehabilitation procedures and in laboratory analyses, especially in immunological analyses.

New cases of diseases and injuries 2016

Data about new cases of diseases and external causes of injuries in 2016 were published in the Health Statistics and Health Research database.

Overall, 2.45 million new cases of diseases (excluding malignant neoplasms) were registered in Estonia last year. Children’s (0–14 years) cases accounted for one-quarter of all new cases.

The diseases of the respiratory system were most common in both children and adults (15 years and older). The diseases of the respiratory system accounted for 40% of all the new cases of diseases of children. These were followed by certain infectious and parasitic diseases (15%), injuries, poisoning and certain other consequences of external causes (8%), and diseases of the ear and mastoid process (7%).

In adults, the diseases of the respiratory system accounted for 17% of all the new cases of diseases. The next most common blocks of diagnosis for men were diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (15%), and injuries and poisonings (12%). Women had more diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue, and diseases of the genitourinary system (13% and 11% from all new cases of diseases, respectively).

In 2016, slightly more than 184 100 external causes for injuries and poisonings were registered. The main reason for injuries was falling (46% of children’s and 43% of adults’ injuries).
