New cases of diseases and injuries 2016

Data about new cases of diseases and external causes of injuries in 2016 were published in the Health Statistics and Health Research database.

Overall, 2.45 million new cases of diseases (excluding malignant neoplasms) were registered in Estonia last year. Children’s (0–14 years) cases accounted for one-quarter of all new cases.

The diseases of the respiratory system were most common in both children and adults (15 years and older). The diseases of the respiratory system accounted for 40% of all the new cases of diseases of children. These were followed by certain infectious and parasitic diseases (15%), injuries, poisoning and certain other consequences of external causes (8%), and diseases of the ear and mastoid process (7%).

In adults, the diseases of the respiratory system accounted for 17% of all the new cases of diseases. The next most common blocks of diagnosis for men were diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (15%), and injuries and poisonings (12%). Women had more diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue, and diseases of the genitourinary system (13% and 11% from all new cases of diseases, respectively).

In 2016, slightly more than 184 100 external causes for injuries and poisonings were registered. The main reason for injuries was falling (46% of children’s and 43% of adults’ injuries).
