The National Institute for Health Development conducts research ordered by the government, for international programmes and on its own initiative.
We conduct research activities in the following fields:
- biostatistics and epidemiology
- oncology
- medical virology
- infectious diseases, drug addiction and risk behaviour.
In a research framework we conduct or participate in periodic national and population-based surveys of the health state and health behaviour of children, youths and adults.
We have well-equipped molecular biology, immunology and virology laboratories enabling us to integrate various biomarkers in epidemiological sample surveys.
Our task is to monitor the implementation of national health strategies and programmes, develop indicators therefor and assess the efficiency of their implementation.
We also develop the theoretical basis of medical sciences, publish articles in specialised literature and participate in education of scientists.
Cooperation with many European research institutions and universities adds an international dimension to our research activities.

The Tallinn Medical Research Ethics Committee active under the Institute provides its expert opinion for all surveys involving humans.
Research activities are financed by the state budget via targeted financing, research grants and national research and development programmes, yet also by international and foreign research programmes and foundations.
The Institute's research activities are led by Professor Toomas Veidebaum, Director of the Research Centre.
