The Estonian Causes of Death Registry collects data on all cases of death registered on the Estonian territory and in Estonian foreign missions.
The aim of the registry is collection and processing of data to develop national social policy, to evaluate population's structure and state of health and to plan preventive actions in the social and public health area.
The data are gathered in the form of death certificate and perinatal death certificate. These are filled in by all doctors and forensic pathologists who have ascertained death.
The Causes of Death Registry operates since January 1, 2008. Before 2008, the data on death causes were collected by Statistics Estonia.
Issuing and publishing of data:
- in the Institute's health statistics and health research database
- in the database of Statistics Estonia
- the data are also transferred to Eurostat and World Health Organization
