Health care providers’ revenues, costs and fixed assets in Estonia 2019

In 2019, there were 1,428 service providers operating in the Estonian health care sector. Their revenue from the provision of health care services and other economic activities was nearly 1.5 billion euros, i.e. 10% more than in 2018.

The funding from the Estonian Health Insurance Fund accounted for 72% of health care sector revenues. Individuals paid almost 211 million euros for health care services, accounting for 14% of revenues. The revenues from individuals were 10% larger than in 2018 mostly due to payments for services of dental care providers.

Personnel expenses have a large share in health care providers’ total costs (55% in 2019). The growth of personnel expenses was 12% having an impact on the increase of total costs.

In 2019, the health care providers’ total net profit was over 90 million euros. 87% of service providers made profit and 13% ended the year with loss. The hospitals generated the largest profit. 

The investments in fixed assets amounted to more than 104 million euros. More than half of the investments were made in buildings and a fourth in machinery and equipment, most of which in medical devices.
