Men's health insurance coverage has increased

National Institute for Health Development has published health insurance statistics 2019 collected and managed by the Estonian Health Insurance Fund. Statistics show that the proportion of men covered by health insurance has increased significantly, which also increases the overall number of health insured persons.

93.6% of the population (92.1% of men and 95% of women) are covered by the Estonian health insurance system. While in the 2014–2018 period it remained stable at 91–92%, then in last year the share of men covered by health insurance has increased significantly (by almost three percentage points), which significantly increases the overall number of health insured persons. The share of women covered by health insurance also increased by one percentage point.
Looking at the health insurance indicator for 20–59 year-olds without taking into account children and the elderly, the share of those insured has also increased significantly from 85.7% to 88.1% in the last year.

The data on Estonian health insurance are published in the Health Statistics and Health Research Database in two ways:

  1. for the age group 20–59, as children under the age of 19 and pensioners are automatically insured,
  2. all persons (including children and the elderly).
